Frequently Asked Questions
Step 1. Go to uniden.com.

Step 3. Select the “Learn More” option under Product Registration.
One of the most common fixes we have found is that when operating the vehicle, owners of R-Series radar detectors will press the mute button on the 12v power adapter supplied with their device. However, pressing and holding the MUTE button will result in dimming the screens brightness between “Auto”, “Bright”, “Dim”, “Dimmer”, “Dark”, and “Off”. If you are experiencing a small blinking dot on your screen in the bottom corners, the radar is in “Dark” mode. This is a normal function of the device. You can return the radar to normal by pressing and holding the mute button on the adapter.
If you have reason to believe that the device is not currently being powered despite being plugged into its power source, press and hold the “Mute” button on either the device or the power adapter to be sure that the screen is not set on the “Off” setting.
Next, look at the other end of the power adapter that plugs into the R-Series radar detector. Inspect the RJ45 acrylic tip for any cracks, dirt, or separation from the wire boot. Ensure the internal wires are still fully seated forward as to make contact with the copper leads. Additionally, inspect the cable boot as over time the cable boot can become frail causing it to either no longer provide the strain relief necessary, or it can become separated from the clear acrylic tip.
Now, return to the cigarette lighter portion of the charger. Inspect the chrome tip for any residue, debris, or dirt that may interfere with a good contact to the cigarette port in your vehicle. If there is any potential contamination, take a cotton swab, apply Isopropyl alcohol to it, and swab softly until the debris is cleared. Once you confirm that the solution has dried, test to see if this has fixed the issue.
If this does not work, either the internal fuse (which has not shown any faulting in past subjects) or internal spring has become worn down over the time of ownership. If this is the case, you may need to replace the charger as the internal spring is not able to be removed from the housing.
No audio
Does the device display a “Sound DB Err” notification?
The error stems from a failure to upload the files when performing a firmware update. In order to resolve the issue, please reattempt the firmware update until it is complete. Once complete, acknowledge the notification and close the update tool. Power on the device and wait for roughly 30-45 seconds to see if the notification persists. If the notification persists, you should consider sending the device in for repair inspection, denoting the previous steps on the repair forms comment box, being as detailed as possible. Does the device have no audio or is the audio intermittent?
When the device is powered on, press the + and – key to check if the device is responding to the changes you are implementing. If the display is responding correctly to your entries and you are still not receiving audio, and you do not have any notifications for sound file errors, you may need to consider sending the device in for repair. If the audio sounds “raspy” “tinny” or intermittent, it is also advised to send the device in for repair to have the speaker replaced by our technician.
How loud do you keep the device on a normal basis?
Previous tests have shown that radar detectors whose audio levels are left on either max or close to max volume will result in the speaker becoming “raspy” “tinny” or intermittent much quicker than those whom leave the speaker on a reasonable or manageable level, though it is not uncommon for the speakers to fault after a long period of use on normal audio levels (audio level 5 or less). If you need the speaker to be set to a higher level (level 6 or higher), you may want to consider using an external 3.5mm speaker such at the BC7, or BC15 with respects to the size of speaker and visibility in the vehicle.
No display
If the radar detector is turned on (you are receiving audible alerts when interacting with keys, or the start test audibly can be heard) and the display is blank, please see the following troubleshooting methods:
Display is cycling through brightness levels despite key interactions
If the devices display is cycling through the brightness levels, either the mute key on either the power adapter or the radar is stuck. Inspect the areas to see if there is any dirt, debris, or is sticky from repeated exposure to hand oils. If you suspect that the cable is faulting, please contact Uniden customer service via our email or phone number for further assistance or send the device in for inspection/repair. When sending the device in, please include the power adapter you are using and describing the previous trouble shooting steps performed to aid in us resolving the repair in a timelier manner. The display is faded, discolored, or displaying artifacts
Over a period of time, OLED displays will begin to fault from:
- continued or repeated exposure to sunlight
- continued high brightness levels commonly referred to as “OLED burn in”
- Repeated vibrations or movement resulting in artifacts / dead pixels in the display
If you suspect your display to be resulting in the above-mentioned symptoms, you can send the device in for replacement by a technician. All of the displays for our radar detectors are not for direct sale, as to ensure both proper installation to the unit, but also to provide the customer with a 90-day day repair warranty should there be any issues after the display is installed by the technician. GPS not connecting
If you are experiencing an issue with the radars GPS not connecting correctly or taking longer than usual to connect we can advise that in some situations, the GPS will take up to 3-5 minutes if the detector has not be turned on for an extended period of time or if you are in a location that might inhibit the performance of the GPS locking on, such as a parking garage or metal roof covered building.

However, if the GPS does not connect after 5 minutes, the GPS antenna may be faulting and need to be replaced. To ensure that this is the case, leave the vehicle turned on and set the display mode to “Speed” and then drive for around 10 minutes. If the speed continues to display “—” during this time then you will need to have the antenna replaced.
GPS Error
For this type of error message, we request that users denote if it is “GPS Error”, “GPS Error: 1”, or “GPS Error: 2” to better aide in diagnosing the issue. Should it be “GPS Error: 1” or “GPS Error: 2” please perform the following steps:
- With the vehicle parked and with the engine on, turn on the radar detector
- Next, wait for the error to display as previously seen
- Once the error displays, and you are still parked, roll down the window and place the detector outside of the window.
- Now wait for 2-3 minutes to see if the GPS connects again.
- If the GPS does not connect, power cycle the unit while leaving it outside the window and see if the error comes back up or changes at all
- If the error changes, please denote the change (whether it is the error number or if the error message went away)
With GPS Error: 1 and 2, we have noted very limited success with replicating it when customers send their effected units in for repair. This is primarily due to the GPS faulting in a way related to location of the device at the time of the fault displaying. We are continuing to document the quantities and cases of these errors to better find a resolve, and will continue to monitor the issue as they arise. If you are experiencing GPS Error: 1 or GPS Error: 2 notifications, please attempt the above-mentioned steps before sending the device in for repair.
Additional FAQ questions
Q: Is there any option to use anything other than the 12v Cig. Lighter port? My vehicle does not have this port and only has USB/USB-C ports.
A: Yes! On Uniden.com, in the search bar if you type in USBC and press enter, the first option available should be USBCRJ11-2M – Uniden America Corporation. We have also tested this with a USB-A adapter with relative success. Please keep in mind not all vehicles USB ports are rated to handle the amount of power draw required by a radar detector. Please see your vehicle owner’s manual for further clarification.
Q: Why is my Radar detector alerting K-Band when no law enforcement is around?
A: One thing radar detectors are competing against, for newer cars, are the safety sensors. Cars that emit collision avoidance, lane monitoring, stop monitoring, and similar features can set off the K band on the radar detector. To solve this issue, you can set the K band filter to ON, but this will lessen the capability to notify you to true K band alerts.
Q: Why is it difficult to get the charger seated all the way / removed. My vehicle’s dash panels bend when I try to pull the charger out with force.
A: The CLA port is a smaller diameter as we want the cable to stay secured during use. If the cable were a looser fit, and a driver hit a bump in the road, the cable could fall out. If this happens, the unit will turn off while operating the vehicle creating a potential instance of distracted driving.
Q: Will my radar still function if I have a heated windshield or if I have an anti-glare coating
A: Heated windshields or windshields with an anti-glare coating typically have metal in them that will either reduce or eliminate any radar’s ability to perform as intended.
Q: Are radar detectors allowed in my state?

Q: How do I get started with my SDS100?
A: To ensure that your unit functions as intended:
1. Begin by going through the start-up procedures. (Allow the unit to turn on and load any information stored from the factory).
2. Once you no longer see the loading bars, you should be on the main home screen of the device. From here, press the red MENU button on the left side of the unit. This will open your main menu. To cycle through all of the options listed, twist the scroll knob clockwise or counterclockwise depending on the option you wish to choose.
3. Next, use the scroll knob and go down to the option labeled “set your location”. Then press and release the scroll knob from the top to select the option highlighted.
4. Enter in the local zip code you intend on listening to by selecting the prompt “Enter Zip Code” followed by your country. Enter the zip code using the keypad on the scanner and press the “E/yes” key to submit what you have input on the screen.
5. After the loading screens are finalized, and you are back on the home screen, press the red MENU button again. Scroll down to the option “WX Operation” followed by “Weather Scan”. At this point, you should hear either a transmission or static.
6. To clarify the audios squelch level, select the green FUNCTION button on the side of the unit, press down on the scroll knob, and twist it. You should see the squelch function either moving up or down.

Q: My device is not being detected by the software when attempting to update its firmware/database.
A: If you are not using the stock USB cable that came with your device, please attempt the update with the original cable.
If this does not fix the error, ensure that your computer’s USB ports are up to date by going into the search bar and typing in “Check for updates”. From here, you should see an option labeled “Advanced options”. Select this and then select the option “Optional Updates”. Here is where you should see all additional updates you may need outside of normal system updates.
Q: My handheld scanner does not hold a very strong battery life and is not lasting as advertised.
A: If the device is not lasting as advertised, fully charge the unit and turn the squelch down to 1 or 2. Set volume to 2-4 if you typically have the volume all the way up. Battery life is affected by volume, squelch, and the number of transmissions you are getting at one time. By adjusting the volume and squelch, you can improve it but it may not always stay that way when you do firmware and database updates.
Additionally, if your device was purchased three or more years ago, try a new set of batteries to see if this results in the same outcome as the stock battery/batteries.
Q: The battery in my SDS100 has swelled and caused the backplate to become tough to put back on.
A: The Li-ion battery (as well as most Li-ion batteries) have a chemical make-up that can cause it to expand under prolonged charge times and in extreme heat. Always ensure you are charging the unit as recommended in the user manual. Never leave it on the unattended for a prolonged amount of time because this could result in the battery damaging your unit.
If your SDS100 is still within its warranty period, you can submit a request for a replacement be sent to you. Otherwise, we have new batteries available for sale on our website.

Q: I downloaded Windows 10, and now my scanner does not work.
A: All of our scanners, with native USB, just plug and play with Windows 10. For older models (i.e. “XT” or “X” models), that have a serial connection, older USB-1 cables will not work because Prolific changed their drivers several years ago to only work with their newer chipset that has anti-counterfeit features. At that time, we changed the chipset in our USB-1 cables. If you have an older USB-1 cable it will not work with Windows 10 (or Windows 8 using current drivers). Newer (last couple of years) cables will work.

Q: I cannot connect my unit to my Mac.
A: The unit is not compatible with Mac. You must connect to a PC.

Q: How do I reset the SD Card?
A: You can reset the SD Card by using the Clear User Data on Sentinel. If it is an access error, then you will need to purchase a new SD Card and then Clear User Data on Sentinel.

A: It means there are no channels programmed into the scanner. You will need to program your scanner in order to Unlock Scan mode. Start by pressing Hold.

Q: How do I program my unit?
A: 1. Push Hold. This should bring up the first available channel. It should show B:1 Channel 1 and 000.000.
2. To program your frequency in, you will push in the Orange Function key and then let go. Immediately push in the E button and let go.
3. You will then see a black box with PGM in it in the top right corner of screen. This means you are in program mode.
4. Type in your frequency including the decimal point. When finished, push in the E key and let go. This will enter in the frequency.
5. To enter in another frequency, turn the knob at the top right one click to the right. This will bring you to the next available channel.
6. Follow step 5 until you have entered all the frequencies you want.
7. When you are finished entering in all of your frequencies you may hit scan. The scanner will now begin scanning your frequencies.

Q: How do I program my units?
A: To program this scanner manually, you will first want to make sure that everything is deleted out of it, i.e. preprogrammed states such as Alaska. To do this you will want to turn off the scanner. While it is turned off, you will push and hold the 2, 9 and Hold keys. Continue holding these down while you power on the unit. Once you see all memory clear, let go of all the keys. It will then ask you if you would like to restore the preprogrammed states. Push the no key which is located below the 7 key. At this point, your scanner will say, scan mode nothing to scan.
Make sure that you go to radioreference.com to get your frequencies and systems. Click on Databases. Choose Frequency database. Click on your state. Click on your county and scroll down to see the frequencies. If you are using a trunktracking system, you will need to make sure you choose the tower closest to you and get the control and alternate frequencies which are highlighted in red and blue. At the top of the page, it will tell you what system they are using such as Motorola, P25, and so on. If your area is not using a trunk tracking system, you will see them on the first page with the frequency all the way to the left. To the right side, it will show FM or FMN which means they are conventional frequencies.
To program your scanner, you will push into the menu. Choose Program System. Push the Yes key. Choose New System. Push yes key. This is where you will choose what kind of system you want, P25, Motorolla, or Conventional. Highlight the system you are choosing and push the Yes key. If you have a P25 system Phase I, and you push the p25, it will then open another menu. You will choose standard. Push the yes key. If the system is Conventional, you will scroll down to Edit Group. Push yes, choose new group, and push yes. Scroll down to Edit Channel, push yes, choose new channel, and push yes. This is where you will put in your frequencies. Make sure to use the decimal point. After you enter in frequency, you will push the yes key. If you have another frequency, scroll down to new channel, and push yes. Then put in your next frequency and so on. Once you have them all entered and hit the final yes key, you may then push the Scan key. It will automatically scan the system.
P25 phase 1 system or Motorola system: Once on the menu for edit name, you will scroll to Edit sys option and push yes. Scroll down to ID Scan/Search and push yes. Highlight ID Scan and push yes. Hit the menu key one time. Scroll down to Edit Site and push yes. Choose New Site and push yes. Scroll down to Enter Frequencies and push yes. Choose New frequency and push yes. This is where you will enter the tower frequencies – the ones in blue and red. Enter one and push yes Then scroll down to new frequency and push yes. Continue these steps for the next one and so on. Once you have them all entered, push the menu key four times. Scroll down to Edit Group. Choose New Group. Scroll down to Edit Channel and push the yes key. Choose New Channel and push the yes key. This is where you will enter in the Talk Group ID which is in the system page on the left-hand side under the DEC column (no decimal points for these). Enter the first one and push yes. Scroll down to New Channel and push yes. Enter your next TGID and continue this for each one. Once you have all of these entered, you will then push the Scan button and the system will automatically scan.
Trunking systems will show on scanners as Site something – something, ID Scanning. Conventional System will show as System 1,2, etc.. You will then be scanning your area.

Note: As of 1/27/25 we have released the update tool for MacOS users and can be found accordingly on our website. Should you need any assistance during the process, please refer to this link for step-by-step instructions:
Step 1. Go to uniden.com and select the support tab. Then select Downloads and Manuals.
Step 2. Enter your model number in the search bar and press enter. Select the most recent version of the update tool, as well as the database. ***For this example, we are using an R3.
Step 3. Begin installing the set-up wizard. Accept all prompts as you proceed through this process.
Step 4. Next, you will be presented with the update tool itself. Proceed by plugging in your radar via the provided USB cable that came with your unit. After your computer recognizes the USB, select the tab that says “UPDATE”.
Note: The display on the radar will not light up during this process asthis port is strictly for data transfers. You do not need to provide power to the RJ11 port on the unit during updates. Doing so may result in potential damage to the unit.
Step 5. Once on the “Update” tab, select “Start Update” and follow the prompts accordingly.
Step 6. Once the unit has finished the update, you should see a text prompt stating “Update Completed!” Once you receive this prompt, press “OK”. You are now free to unplug and resume using the product as normal.
Update (5/15): For Android and Pixel users experiencing Bluetooth connectivity issues, or cannot find the radar in their bluetooth connections, please follow these steps:
1. Once you have downloaded the R/Tach Application to your phone and you have launched the application, your device’s screen should reflect the below image. This is the starting screen for connecting to a radar detector. At this moment, please ensure your mobile device has bluetooth enabled.
2. Now that you have ensured that Bluetooth is turned on for your mobile device, check your unit by going through the menu and ensuring you have Bluetooth enabled. After this, on your R-series device, scroll over to the screen labeled “BT Pairing” and press the menu key to select it. After this, select the radar detector on your APP/mobile device.
3. Once you have completed the above steps, you will receive a message stating that the radar is wanting to pair to your mobile device. Select “pair”, and by doing so you will see the radar’s display show “Pairing Successful” for a moment, then return to the home screen.
4. If the pairing is fully accepted, you will see the blue letter “B” on your display as shown below.
5. Additionally, after the Bluetooth connection is confirmed, your display on your mobile device will move into the main display for the application. This display is primarily for diagnostics and information in relation to alerts, battery, speed, and multiple other points of information that can be customized to your preference via the settings menu.
6. Continuing with the discussion of settings, if you select the 4 square boxes in the upper left-hand corner you will be presented with both your user settings (Settings), Wi-fi settings selection, firmware updates, and other general information about the application.
7. Beginning with the wi-fi settings, the unit will connect to a 2.4g connection and is most commonly found via your ISP’s guest connection if it is not currently enabled. If you do not have it enabled, either contact your ISP to enable it, or use your ISP’s dedicated app to enable a guest connection.
8. After you have done the above steps, you will see the connection available to use for your device. Ensure that the Wifi/BT is set to ON for the radar, then it will begin connecting to the newly established Wi-Fifi. Once your mobile device has established connection, you should see the symbol on your device as shown below.
9. The arrow is indicating that there is a download available for your unit and can be started. You can perform this update via the app under the “Firmware Updates” tab. Your device is now successfully paired to your mobile device.
